Common excuses not to join choir:** Please note: Most music teachers will tell you that you have to take their class in sixth grade because you won't be able to catch up if you start in 7th or 8th grade. They may say "You can always take choir later." Not true! Each music class will teach you the musical skills you need and provide lots of fun. But most importantly, you need to sign up for the class that YOU want to take. In the middle of a busy school day, your elective class should be the one you will always look forward to.
- I can't be in choir because I'm going to be in athletics. You can take choir AND be in athletics. The schedules are set so there are no conflicts. Also, choir requires very few evening commitments (four!). There are no required before or after school rehearsals.
- I can't be in choir because the fees are too high. We strive the keep the costs down and our boosters generously provide scholarships for deserving students. Also, we participate in at least one fundraiser per year. Please see the Handbook for further information on choir fees.
- I can't be in choir because it's just for girls. What?! We have lots of guys in our choirs and we even have an event once a year called "Boys to Men" that is for boys only. NO GIRLS ALLOWED! We play football, eat some barbecue, and learn a few songs, then perform a concert, all in one day. At Roach, we even offer an entire choir that is just for our boys. Guys rule!
- I can't be in choir because I already chose another elective. At Roach, you have one week to change your schedule. At Fowler, you have two weeks to change your schedule. Anyone that signs up for choir will be accepted.
- I can't be in choir because I can't sing. Everybody can sing! But if you think you can't, that's why you should take the class! I am here to teach you how and show you that none of us are perfect, but we have a great time trying and do not hold ourselves to the standard of perfection. No one is EVER asked to sing by themselves in front of the class.
- I can't be in choir because my parents already bought my instrument. If you are renting an instrument, most plans will allow you a grace period to return your instrument without any penalty. In choir, we already have our instruments -- our voices! They are free, easy to carry, and we always have them with us. Easy!
- I can't be in choir because I sang in elementary and I want to try something new. Let me assure you that choir in middle school is nothing like choir in elementary. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and we vary our activities from day to day, working on projects, learning new songs, learning basic piano skills, going on field trips, learning music technology, and on and on!
